Vilanova day 1
Morning
1. Paseo do Cabo
The best way to start your day is to marvel at the views of the estuary from Paseo do Cabo. The starting point is the Mar de Santiago Ferry Terminal. You will enjoy the seascape of Vilanova, featuring the silhouettes of mussel rafts and boats as part of the panorama. Closer to land, you can see the fishing port with its small boats used to gather shellfish.
As you pass along Paseo do Cabo you will come across a unique statue: that of the Momo. It is the representation of one of the most important festivals in Vilanova, which is held on Piñata Sunday, putting the finishing touch to the area’s Carnival festivities. At the end of the route, there is the Plaza de O Castro, presided over by the monument to the writer Ramón María del Valle-Inclán. This sculptural ensemble consists of 5 pieces made of bronze measuring almost 2 metres, which depict scenes from some of his most outstanding works and his most emblematic characters: Max Estrella and Don Latino, The Marquis of Bradomín, Prince Verdemar, Lucero, and Mari Gaila.
2. Jardín Umbrío
After the literary break, you can visit another of our municipal district’s iconic spots: Jardín Umbrío. If you visit us with your family, this place will delight your little ones, as it features an original park full of different and amusing games. Among them, a small round square with little houses, as well as tree houses.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the municipal Plaza de Abastos (food market). Here you can buy all kinds of km 0 produce with which to enrich your dinner table. The seafood and fish stalls will catch your attention, as well as those of vegetables. Don’t hesitate to ask the sellers to clear up any queries you may have! They will be glad to help you! If your visit coincides on a Friday, you can also see the weekly market, which has fifty stalls selling different types of items.
You can enhance your tour by visiting the Irmáns Camba House-Museum, which is just a few steps away. Remember that the visit is included in your ticket for the Valle-Inclán House-Museum. This centre features an extensive tour of the life and work of two prolific writers and journalists from the early 20th century: Francisco and Julio Camba.
After this first itinerary, we recommend that you take the opportunity to eat in one of the restaurants at the foot of the promenade or that you try one of the restaurants located in the town centre. Whether you want to have tapas, a menu of the day or more elaborate dishes, there are different options available for you.
Afternoon
3. Town Centre
We suggest you immerse yourself in Vilanova’s culture and history. You will discover it as you stroll through the heart of our urban area. You will recognize in the names some of Valle-Inclán’s works and characters. As you pass through the area, you will also be able to see the wide range of local shops.
4. Valle-Inclán House-Museum
A must-stop is the Valle-Inclán House-Museum, located on Luces de Bohemia Street. Here you can delve into the life and work of the creator of the grotesque, as well as discover what the typical Galician manor house of the late 19th and early 20th centuries was like.
In the vicinity of the author’s birthplace, we will follow his first footsteps to the Church of A Pastoriza, where he was christened. Later, we will be welcomed by the Casa do Cantillo or House of the Three Balconies, where he was raised with his siblings, as well as the Church of San Cipriano de Cálago and the beautiful Chapel of San Mauro.
5. Torre do Cálago
Just a five-minute walk away is one of the municipal district’s most historic points in the municipality: the Cálago Tower. From here you can enjoy unparalleled views of the Ría de Arousa, as well as discover the remains of the ancient Benedictine monastery of San Cipriano de Cálago. It was destroyed during the first of the Norman attacks that took place between the 9th and 11th centuries.
6. O Terrón and As Sinas Beaches
After this journey through time, you can visit our beaches. In addition to being an ideal place to enjoy the sun, the surroundings of the beaches of O Terrón and As Sinas are perfect for relaxing while watching the sunset. In the case of O Terrón, you will only have to cross the wooden footbridge located next to the Ferry Terminal. If you prefer to go to As Sinas, we recommend that you take the path along the seafront, which will take you half an hour to complete on foot, approximately. You will be surprised by the itinerary due to its beautiful seascapes.
