Ways of St. James
The Route of the Sea of Arousa and Ulla River
This Way of St. James Route features a unique maritime-river combination. You will sail along the RÃa de Arousa, recreating the journey made by the remains of the Apostle James from Jaffa (Palestine) to the West, where he had carried out his evangelizing work. Legend has it that his remains arrived in Compostela after having crossed the RÃa de Arousa and sailed up the Ulla River in a stone boat. From this tradition arose the creation of the Route of the Sea of Arousa and Ulla River, which has its own diploma certifying that you have completed the Way of St. James called the Traslatio Xacobea.
The boat trip begins in the ports of O Grove and Ribeira and, from there, you will sail along the RÃa de Arousa and up the Ulla River, discovering the 22 municipal districts in the provinces of Pontevedra and A Coruña included in this initiative. You can also discover the 17 stone crosses of the only maritime-river Way of the Cross in the world, which evokes the journey through this area to bring the Apostle James’ to Santiago. One of the stops on the route is the port of Vilanova de Arousa, where you can rest before resuming the Traslatio route as far as Pontecesures. Once you arrive in Padrón, you will be able to obtain the diploma certifying that you have completed the itinerary.
