MEJILLONES

Vilanova de Arousa was the first municipal district in the Ría de Arousa to have mussel rafts. Aquaculture dates back to 1945, with the first installation of these floating structures. Thanks to this initiative, these waters were found to be very rich in phytoplankton, thus favouring the cultivation of this bivalve. The industry therefore expanded very quickly, accumulating more than 2,300 rafts in the Ría de Arousa, which accounts for almost three quarters of the total of 3,400 installations located Galician estuaries. To get to know the world of rafts, we recommend that you take one of the boat trips around the Ría de Arousa or even the Traslatio route.

From a gastronomic point of view, mussels are a very versatile food that can be used to make different types of dishes. Steamed, in vinaigrette, in empanadas (Galician pies) You have multiple options to taste the authentic flavour of the Ría de Arousa!

In addition, mussels have excellent nutritional values. This hermaphrodite mollusc is essential for a balanced diet, as it is a high-protein, low-fat product with a high Omega 3 content, in addition to providing vitamins such as B12, B2 and B9 and minerals such as iron, phosphorus, selenium, iodine and zinc.
