Ways of St. James
Padre Sarmiento Route
This tour recalls the journey made by Fray MartÃn Sarmiento to Santiago de Compostela, when he returned to Galicia during the Holy Year of 1745. This 190-kilometre route -divided into 7 stages- will enable you to discover the secrets of the O Salnés region, leaving from the town of Poio and ending in Pontecesures, before resuming the Portuguese Way to Compostela.
The sixth stage of this route ends in Vilanova de Arousa. You will reach the town centre by walking along seaside trails, enabling you to discover the beautiful beach of O Terrón. Once you have rested, you can choose between two possibilities to reach Pontecesures: going up the river and discovering the experience of the Traslatio route or continuing by land along the VilagarcÃa coast to continue on to Padrón.
You can follow this route on your own, since it is clearly signposted. In addition to the signs indicating the way, you will also find information panels regarding each section’s most outstanding points of interest. If you want to obtain more information, you can visit the route’s website or consult some of the information leaflets in our downloads section.
